Flo Rida once boasted “Club Can’t Handle It,” but the Winterfest Boat Parade certainly can.
This Friday at 6 p.m., the Hard Rock Casino will host an invite-only ceremony in which Flo Rida will be named grand marshal of the boat parade while also being given a key to the city by the Fort Lauderdale mayor, Jack Seiler.

Previous marshals include such big names as Kim Kardashian and Jim Belushi, but Winterfest is ecstatic it could use someone local this year. Winterfest marketing director Kathy Keleher told New Times, “We were able to pick someone from our neighborhood. Flo Rida’s very active in the community with his sports programs and has extended himself beyond the reaches of hip-hop,” she said of the Carol City-bred rapper.
As grand marshal, Flo Rida’s responsibilities, according to Keleher, include “enjoying himself and waving and saying hello to everyone on the 12-mile route of the parade.”
Winterfest Parade, billed as the “greatest show on H2O,” will be held Saturday night for the 43rd year, traveling east on the New River and north on the Intracoastal to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach.
Other participants include former marshal and ’70s teen sensation David Cassidy, the reigning Miss Florida and Miss Teen Florida pageant winners, as well as Light Up The Night Robots, which are ten foot LED robots that hopefully will not take over the earth one day.
As far as whether attendees of the grand marshal reception or the parade might be graced with a live rendition of “Whistle” or “Right Round,” Keleher was mum. “There’s always a chance Flo Rida might perform, but we’re not making any promises. You’ll just have to come to the parade and see.”
